One 'witch, Deborah Griffen, is an outlier in Symsbury, estranged from her deceased husband's family and behind in her taxes as she attempts to keep her lot; the other witch, Mercy Moses, is embraced by her community as the daughter of her larger-than-life father - - but after his loss, she practices healing arts among the people to make her way. Both have detractors: Deborah is suspected by Peter Buell, a prominent Free-man, who is trying to reestablish the town after its razing by the Pequots -- while facing the challenges of poor harvests, an errant minister, and Indian abduction. Mercy is accused by Dr. Reade, lately arrived from the Massachusetts Bay Colony with firm ideas about a woman's place in society, who jealously guards the burgeoning practice he and his son have established in the Farmington Valley. The witches discover they have unexpected defenders, once the Symsbury settlers begin to take sides, and meet with very different endings through ironic twists of fate for each.
